Discipleship Responsibilities

As we pray and walk this life today, let’s pray for our walk with Jesus as his disciples.  A disciple is a learner, follower, or student. But you see it’s really deeper than that, it’s a person that takes what the teacher is teaching and puts into practice. A disciple in Jesus’ day took it even more seriously that just making application of what the teacher was teaching, they eventually lived it with such passion that you couldn’t tell the difference between the teacher and the pupil. First of all a disciple would take on the responsibility of memorizing all that their teacher was teaching. They worked continuously to memorize their words and thoughts so that at any point in time they could tell what the teacher knew but that those teachings because a part of their life. They also adopted the teacher’s unique interpretation of the scriptures. (Interestingly enough, this teaching was called: “a yoke.” Didn’t Jesus tell his followers that his “yoke” was light?) Then they would begin imitating the teacher’s way of life. Trying to do everything the teacher did, exactly the way the teacher did them. And lastly, the disciple would begin discipling/teaching others in the way of their teacher. (They went out and made other disciples.) A disciple is one that takes on the role of their teacher. Discipleship is truly getting into the character of Jesus Christ; it’s reading the scriptures and from them taking our cue’s on how to live our lives. Jesus has called us to turn over our lives to Him, to take up the cross and follow him – to become like him. So, I worry that people I love aren’t catching Jesus’ words. I pray that we all will strive with all we have to become like Jesus. Let’s pray today that we will be exactly like Jesus.
